In this video we derive the non-relativistic limit of the Dirac equation. By doing so we retrieve the Schrödinger equation. In the next order we obtain three correction terms to the Schrödinger equation. The mass velocity term, the Darwin term and the spin-orbit coupling term. These terms are equal in size, but the last one is more important whilst it brakes the symmetries of the Schrödinger equation and lifts degeneracies. In the lecture of next week we will discuss the size of these effects in more detail when looking at the non-relativistic limit in spherical symmetry.
