Lahore’s largest gold market — often described as Pakistan’s biggest and even one of Asia’s largest — has been shaken by a massive gold scam.

Around 150 jewelers allege that a trusted senior dealer, who also served as the market chairman, has fled with nearly 20 kilograms of gold, worth approximately Rs 1.2 billion. The gold was reportedly kept with him as a trust-based deposit, a common practice in the jewelry trade.

According to market representatives, the trader had been working in the market for nearly 30 years and was widely regarded as honest and reliable. CCTV footage has now emerged showing him allegedly leaving the market with bags containing gold before disappearing.

The affected jewelers say they have been financially devastated. In response, the gold traders have announced a reward of Rs 100 million for information leading to his arrest.

مارکیٹ عہدیداروں کے مطابق مذکورہ تاجر گزشتہ تیس برس سے کاروبار کر رہا تھا، نماز پڑھتا تھا اور انتہائی قابلِ اعتماد سمجھا جاتا تھا۔ کسی کو یہ اندازہ نہیں تھا کہ وہ اس طرح مارکیٹ کو نقصان پہنچا کر غائب ہو جائے گا۔ اب سامنے آنے والی سی سی ٹی وی فوٹیج نے معاملے کو مزید سنگین بنا دیا ہے۔

متاثرہ سنیاروں کا کہنا ہے کہ وہ مکمل طور پر لٹ چکے ہیں۔ تاجروں نے اعلان کیا ہے کہ جو شخص اس تاجر کا سراغ دے گا، اسے ایک کروڑ روپے انعام دیا جائے گا۔
