For over 45 years, Iran has been ruled not by a president, but by one of the most powerful unelected positions in the modern world — the Supreme Leader of Iran.
But what exactly is this position?
How did it come into existence?
Why has Iran had only two Supreme Leaders since 1979?
And why do mass protests repeatedly fail to remove this post?
This video explains Iran’s real power structure, beyond headlines and slogans.
After the 1979 Iranian Revolution, Iran did not become a normal republic. Instead, revolutionary clerics—led by Ruhollah Khomeini—introduced a new doctrine called Wilayat-e-Faqih (Guardianship of the Islamic Jurist).
This ideology placed religious authority above democracy, giving birth to the role of the Supreme Leader.
The Supreme Leader is not just a political figure. He is considered the ultimate interpreter of Shia Islam in Iran, with authority over:
Islamic law
Religious institutions
Moral legitimacy of the state
In Shia belief, this role fills the vacuum left by the hidden Imam, giving the position divine justification.
The Supreme Leader controls:
The military and nuclear program
The judiciary
State media
Election approvals
Foreign policy
War and peace decisions
Iran’s president, parliament, and courts cannot overrule him.
Since 1979, Iran has had only:
Ruhollah Khomeini (1979–1989)
Ali Khamenei (1989–present)
This is not accidental. The system is designed to ensure continuity, control, and ideological purity, not leadership change.
Khomeini created the system.
Khamenei perfected and militarized it.
Under Khamenei, the Supreme Leader became more powerful than ever—especially through institutions like the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
Recent protests in Iran are different.
They are not just about:
Inflation
Hijab laws
Sanctions
They directly challenge the legitimacy of the Supreme Leader itself, questioning the religious and political foundation of the Islamic Republic.
Earlier uprisings failed because:
The Supreme Leader is not elected
Protesters attacked symptoms, not the structure
The security system remained loyal
Institutions like:
Guardian Council
Assembly of Experts exist specifically to protect the Supreme Leader, not challenge him.
