Note that Carnforth does not have platforms on the main WCML and is only served by Northern services from Lancaster to Skipton/Leeds and Barrow-in-Furness/Cumbrian Coast, a similar layout exists at Newton which has no platforms on the main lines.

The distance between Lockerbie and Carstairs is the second longest gap between any 2 stations with the longest being on the Edinburgh WCML services between Lockerbie and Kirknewton.

Services on this route operated by Avanti West Coast usually operate every hour as part of the London Euston to Glasgow Central service which is non stop London to Warrington. Avanti also operate an additional service between Preston and Carlisle every 2 hours which continues to Edinburgh with this service coming from London via Birmingham, previously the other hour Birmingham service provided another Glasgow service but this now only goes to Blackpool North in most hours. TransPennine Express operate additional services every hour between Preston and Carlisle which is part of the Manchester Airport to Scotland (Glasgow or Edinburgh) service which is the primary service provider at Lockerbie, they also operate occasional extras as part of the Liverpool to Glasgow services. Between Preston and Lancaster/Oxenholme there are additional Northern services and between Carstairs and Glasgow Central there are various ScotRail services in to Glasgow either on the the high level central station or the low level cross Glasgow platforms.

The rolling stock used by Avanti services on this route is almost always 9 and 11 carriage class 390 Pendolino tilting trains on fast London to Glasgow services. Other Avanti services on this route are sometimes operated by 5 carriage class 221 Super Voyager DMU trains. Once the new class 805 and 807 Hitachi trains enter service with Avanti services north of Preston are planned to be operated only by the class 390 units.

This route is fully electrified throughout using overhead AC electrification. This route is mainly 2 track between Preston and Glasgow with passing loops provided for slower freight services. Eventually this route is planned to be used by HS2 services between London and Scotland which will join the new railway south of Preston.
