The year was 1981—a turning point in music history. MTV exploded onto screens, making image as powerful as sound. Synth-pop and new wave lit up the charts with The Human League and Soft Cell, while U2, The Police, and Phil Collins reshaped rock.
Heavy metal thundered with Iron Maiden, AC/DC, and Ozzy Osbourne, as Prince and Rick James kept funk and dance alive. And on the streets of New York, Grandmaster Flash and the pioneers of hip-hop sparked a revolution. 1981 was the year the ’70s ended—and the sound of the future began.
This year's best-selling single was "Don't You Want Me" by the synth-pop band, the Human League. It was the fourth single from their third studio album, "Dare". The single sold over 1,560,000 copies in the UK, making it the 23rd-most successful single in UK singles chart history.
