It was founded by political cartoonist K. Shankar Pillai. The Children's Book Trust building on Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg is home to the Children's Book Trust, which is reached by a separate entrance and a winding staircase that leads to a foyer. The museum, which comprises a portion of the first floor, has a floor area of 5,184.5 sq ft (481.66 m2).
The Dolls Museum's major collections include of 150 different varieties of Indian costume dolls made in the museum's own workshop, which is located inside the museum. The dolls are meticulously handcrafted to produce a symphony of physical traits, clothes, and accessories. Characters from India's unique traditional dance, Kathakali, with its elaborate costumes, appear in the pageant. Boys and Girls Festival dolls from Japan, replica Dolls of the Queen's collection from the United Kingdom, Maypole Dance from Hungary, Kabuki and Samurai dolls from Japan, Flamenco dancers from Spain, Women's Orchestra from Thailand, and Kandy Pehara from Sri Lanka are among the dolls of particular interest.
The Dolls Museum dolls were even given first place, the Golden Peacock Feather, in the 1980 Dolls Biennale in Cracow, Poland. The museum's main features include Japanese Kabuki and Samurai dolls, Hungarian Maypole dance replica dolls, UK Queen collections, and a Thai women's orchestra, among others.
