【京都／二十二社】松尾大社／秦氏ゆかりの王城鎮護社 - Matsuo Taisha Shrine in KYOTO, JAPAN -

松尾大社は、京都市西京区にある神社で、二十二社（上七社）の一社。「松尾」の読みは、公式には「まつのお」ですが、一般には「まつお」と称されています。京都盆地の西部、四条通の西端に鎮座し、東端に鎮座するのが八坂神社となります。境内は、松尾山の麓に位置して、本殿は室町時代造営の珍しい両流造で国の重要文化財となっています。また、神使を亀と鯉とすることでも知られる神社です。
御祭神は、大山咋神（おおやまぐいのかみ）と 市杵島姫命（いちきしまひめのみこと）。元来、松尾大社のはじまりは、松尾山頂の磐座での祭祀に始まるとされます。大宝元年（701年）に文武天皇の勅命により秦都理（とり）が現在地に社殿を設けたといわれ、以後、秦氏の氏神として奉斎され、平安京遷都後は東の賀茂神社とともに西の王城鎮護社となりました。また、松尾大社は、秦氏ゆかりの神社として第一に挙げられる神社でもあります。
中世以降は酒の神としても信仰され、現在も酒神として酒造関係者の信仰を集めております。社伝では社殿裏にある霊泉「亀の井」の水を酒に混ぜると腐敗しないといい、醸造家がこれを持ち帰る風習が今も残っている。

Matsuo, and the main hall is a rare Ryoryuzukuri style built during the Muromachi period and is an important cultural property. The shrine is also known for its Shinto messengers, a tortoise and a carp.

Matsuo-taisha is said to have its origins in a ritual held on a rock at the top of Mt. Matsuo. In 701, the shrine was built by Hata Tori at the present location by order of Emperor Monmu. After that, it was enshrined as Hata's clan, and along with Kamo Shrine in the east, it became the royal castle guardian shrine in the west of Heiankyo. Matsuo Taisha is also the first shrine associated with the Hata clan.
Since the Middle Ages, it has been worshiped as a god of sake, and even now, it is worshiped by people involved in sake brewing as a god of sake. According to shrine legend, if water from the sacred spring "Kame-no-i" located behind the shrine building is mixed with sake, it will not spoil, and the custom still remains for brewers to bring it back home.
