Museums and Coloniality (OV subtitles SPA)

For Françoise Vergès, the museum as we understand it can only be interpreted as a colonial institution. Decolonizing it requires absolute disorder, a series of specific relinquishing and restorative tactics that turn this issue into a political and artistic battlefield. Returning dignity to dispossessed populations, refocusing the institution’s attention, and harnessing collective creativity to develop other possible archetypes are all part of the diagnostic as well as the solution to the problem.

An anti-racism activist, author, cultural agitator… Françoise Vergès is a key thinker on decolonial feminism and one of the most relevant intellectuals in the decolonization of the arts and museums. Her career is characterized by her relentless condemnation of systems of racial and gender domination, as well as colonialism.
