When thinking of Cartier, which symbol comes to mind immediately? Exactly, it’s the panther. For more than 100 years, it has been part of Cartier’s jewelry – as brooches, necklaces, bracelets, rings and earrings and the Maison also dedicated a watch to it – its iconic Panthère. How did the panther become inextricably linked to the French jewelry house? It is actually linked to a very interesting and trailblazing woman called Jeanne Toussaint who is still considered one of the most important jewelry designers in history. Together with Cartier, she put the panther on the map – and on celebrity clients such as Wallis Simpson, Barbara Hutton, Prince Sadruddin Aga Khan and Maria Callas.
