Join me and my son on our first Father Son Canoe trip on the Rabbit River in Nopiming Provincial Park!! I was first introduced to backcountry canoeing and camping on this river and have travelled it many times. Best fishing I have ever had was in May at Campsite 6 at the rapids next to camp.
If you are looking for a wilderness adventure, the Rabbit River to Cole Lake route is a great option. Although the Rabbit River is an easy route to navigate and relatively short, the winding river, shallow water, headwinds and beaver dams can really create some challenges. If you are heading towards Cole Lake in a tandem canoe with a lot of gear (ie. jugs of water, cooler, packs of beer, etc...) and/or a heavier plastic canoe there can be a lot of dragging and walking when water levels are low. I have done it with a lot of gear, just give yourself an early start to the day and make sure to stay hydrated and fueled up. You'll have your work cut out for you!!
If you are looking for deeper water, I would suggest the Seagrim Lake Chain Canoe Route or the Bird River canoe route launching at Tulabi Falls/Lake. Be sure to check out the video of my 4-Day father daughter canoe trip on the Seagrim Lake Chain.
