Today, I’m heading from South Jetty RV Park in Florence, Oregon, to Winchester Bay. It’s a part of US 101. So, let’s get going.
On the way down to Winchester Bay, on the right side, there are sand dunes between the road and the Pacific Ocean. This area is the Oregon Dunes National Recreation Area. It’s an ATV paradise. While you can rent and ride them yourself, many rental companies also offer experience courses for tourists.
On the left side going down, there are several large lakes. Some of these are designated Oregon state parks, and many people enjoy fishing and water activities here.
The total distance is about 25 miles. Winchester Bay is a small town on the Oregon Pacific coast. It’s an area with a small harbor, and around the harbor, there are many places where RVs can stay. Many tourists come here to go crabbing, but on weekends, the place is filled with people who come to enjoy ATV riding.
It’s a place where people gather to experience the thrilling adventure of racing over the sand in Oregon Dunes. There are also several campgrounds along the beach for them.
I’m going crabbing. I’m going to use a crab snare.
This is Reedsport. Winchester Bay doesn’t have a large market, but here there is a Safeway and several gas stations, making it a convenient town. It’s less than five miles from Winchester Bay.
Here we are in Winchester Bay. If you look to the right as you enter, you’ll see the harbor. There are RV parks on both sides of the entrance.
If you turn right here, you’ll reach the harbor, and several boats sell fresh seafood. There’s also a public crab dock where you can catch crabs with traps, and you can launch boats as well. The restrooms are clean, and the cell phone signal is good.
There’s a parking area where RVs can dry camp for $20 per day. Since there’s no electricity, you can hear the sound of generators running here and there in the evenings.
This is the entrance to the beachfront RV park.
The crab dock you see over there was damaged by last year’s winter storm and is currently closed. I plan to do some crab snaring near that area, so I’ll head over there.
That’s all for today. If you continue without entering this park, you can go to the beach and there are also campgrounds. The sand dunes where the ATVs ride are also connected.
On that road, there’s the Umpqua River Lighthouse, and the view of the sunset from there is magnificent. When sunset approaches, the parking lot gets packed with cars. Also, at night, the lighthouse shines its light to guide ships, and that sight is also beautiful.
Winchester Bay is a place that stays in my mind in many ways.
