In this video I try to make intuitive the method regression back to the mean when making predictions for a response variable based on a known value of the explanatory variable. Did I succeed? I don't know. You can let me know!
All things being equal, we would always predict an individual is average.
However, if we know about another variable highly correlated to the response variable, we can start to make predictions away from the average.
By how much? We use z-scores.
If an individual is z standard deviations from the mean in X, then we predict the individual is r*z standard deviations from the mean of Y.
We look at some examples of trying to predict an adult male college student back on their weight. All conclusions are based on a small sample of college students from some unknown university.
