Hey everyone — it’s Leaflit! In today’s video I’m reacting to the controversial UK government-funded game Pathways — a choose-your-own-adventure “educational” game aimed at 11–18-year-olds that’s part of the Prevent counter-terrorism programme. The game puts players in the shoes of teens navigating online debates, immigration, protests, and cultural issues — and if your character questions mass migration, researches immigration statistics, or protests “erosion of British values”, the game warns you could be flagged as an “extremist” and referred to anti-terror authorities.

Now, I’m all for teaching kids about critical thinking, safety, and real extremism — but this game crosses the line into stifling free speech and political thought by effectively teaching children that simply raising questions or concerns about issues like immigration could make them “extreme”.

Here’s how I see it:

I’m critical of Pathways — it feels less like honest education and more like fear-based messaging that tells kids what to think instead of how to think. In the game, innocent acts like researching immigration statistics or attending a peaceful protest can increase your “extremism meter” and lead to counseling or referrals, which is troubling when you consider this is aimed at school pupils.

It really worries me that taxpayer money is being used for a project like this instead of addressing real problems facing the UK — like housing, immigration policy, healthcare, and public safety. There are real debates to be had about immigration and national identity, but a game that punishes questioning or research feels more like indoctrination than education.

Free speech is essential, especially for young people learning to navigate complex issues. Labeling legitimate questions or civic engagement as “extremism” — even in a game — teaches kids to fear critical thinking and censor themselves, which is the opposite of what democratic societies should be encouraging.
