The true story of Operation Market Garden centers around the Allies' attempt in September 1944 to hasten the end of World War II by advancing through Belgium and the Netherlands into Germany. The plan involved U.S. airborne divisions seizing the towns of Eindhoven and Nijmegen, while a British airborne division, supported by a Polish airborne brigade, aimed to capture the town of Arnhem. These forces were to be reinforced by the British XXX Corps, which would advance from the southern British lines. The operation's success relied heavily on capturing key bridges; if the Germans were able to hold or destroy these bridges, the paratroopers would not receive the necessary reinforcements. Ultimately, flawed intelligence, overconfidence among Allied high command, and determined German resistance turned Arnhem into a bridge too far.
