• Static holds: Hanging from ropes or beams for extended periods
• Strongman-style exercises: Farmer’s walks and lifting heavy stones

Conditioning
Cardiovascular fitness was crucial for arena performance:
• Running: Often performed while wearing full armor or weighted vests
• Boxing drills: Shadow boxing and punching bag work
• Sprints: High-intensity interval training

Skill Development
Gladiators honed their combat skills through:
• Weapons training: Progressing from wooden swords to real weapons
• Defensive drills: Practicing shield work and evasion techniques

Nutrition
Key Components
• Grains: Barley and wheat were staples, earning gladiators the nickname “barley men”
• Legumes: Beans and broad beans provided plant-based protein
• Protein: Pork, fish and poultry

Supplementation
Gladiators drank a special tonic made from plant ashes, rich in calcium and magnesium, to promote bone healing and strength. This was likely combined with salt and honey.
