The Gascoyne Murchison region in Australia's Golden Outback is characterized by miles of rich red earth, rugged rock formations,
We head inland from Carnarvon and start to explore The Gascoyne Murchison region. We head through Gascoyne Junction and hit the red dirt with lots of wild flowers spreading through the paddocks and along the road, we follow the Wool wagon track and explore the old home sites.
We camped the night at Bilung Pool .Not quite a lake, but this natural water feature has year round water ,It is pet friendly, with plenty of shade from the large trees, there is also a lot of rock firepits… and it is BYO everything!
We head down the back tracks away from other campers , we ride our bikes around exploring , we find a way to get to the water but is to cold to swim.
Our next stop is Afghan Rock….. its located just off the Beringarra Cue Road in west Western Australia a distance of about 560km north-northeast from Perth. Afghan Rock is at an elevation of approximately 447m above sea level. The nearest ocean is the Indian Ocean about 350km west-southwest of Afghan Rock.
We camp at Big Bell a Ghost Town, near Cue, it was once a hive of activity when the Big Bell Mine was in operation in the early 1900s. Wander through the derelict town to envisage how life would have been, and get a sense the opulence that once graced the former town of Big Bell.
We walk through the magnificent ruins of the Big Bell Hotel which still looks impressive from its exterior. Wonder through the shell of the building to see the remains of the bar which is said to have been the longest bar in Australia in its day.
The town of Big Bell was established in 1936 with the opening of the Big Bell Gold Mine. The town and mine thrived for almost 20 years before finally closing its doors in 1955.
Big Bell Ghost Town is a 15 minute drive west of the remote town of Cue, which is a seven hour drive north of Perth.
