Mari Silje Samuelsen was born on December 21, 1984, in Hamar, Norway. She began playing the violin at the tender age of three at a local music school. By the age of four, she was a student of the renowned violinist Arve Tellefsen in Oslo. Her early education also included studies at the prestigious Barratt Due Institute of Music, where she studied under Stephan Barratt-Due. Later, she continued her advanced studies with the world-renowned Russian professor and violinist Zakhar Bron at the Zurich University of the Arts, where she earned two master’s degrees. Mari Samuelsen is celebrated for her innovative and imaginative violin performances. She has collaborated with many notable artists, including Max Richter, Jeff Mills, and Dubfire. In 2014, she and her brother Håkon Samuelsen premiered "Pas de Deux," a double concerto composed by James Horner specifically for them. Her debut solo album, "Mari," was released in 2019 through Deutsche Grammophon, featuring modern and minimalist pieces. Mari has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious venues, including Carnegie Hall in New York, Théatre des Champs-Elysées in Paris, Tonhalle in Zurich, and the Kremlin in Moscow. She has collaborated with many renowned conductors and orchestras and is also a devoted chamber musician. Throughout her career, Mari has received several prizes and honors. These include three Norwegian cultural honor prizes and numerous national and international scholarships. She is notably the only Scandinavian musician to have won the Crescendo prize from the Meister Foundation in Switzerland.
Mari Samuelsen plays on a fine G. B. Guadagnini violin from 1773, which is generously on loan from the Anders Sveaas Charitable Foundation in Oslo. She also uses a Dominique Peccatte bow on loan from Sparebanken Hedmark.
