The fuel gauge and sending unit with an approximate range of 73 ohms (empty) to 10 ohms (full) were standard across many early models and apply to a wide range of CJs and military Jeeps.
This includes:
CJ-2A
CJ-3A
CJ-3B
DJ-3A
M-38
M-38A1
Early CJ-5 and CJ-7 models (generally those produced between 1966 and 1986 also use this 73-10 ohm standard).
It is important to note that all of these vehicles used a non-linear resistance curve, where the half-tank reading is around 23 ohms, not the mathematical halfway point of 40 ohms. This means that the gauge and sending unit must be matched to ensure accurate readings throughout the full range of the tank. The same resistance specifications are used for both original 6-volt systems and common 12-volt conversions.
The original style fuel gauge works in a specific resistance range with its matching sending unit.
The sending unit resistance readings are:
Empty: Approximately 70-80 ohms (some sources list up to 73 ohms or 130-140 ohms for some reproduction units).
Full: Approximately 8-10 ohms (some sources list 10-12 ohms).
