The 1937 Buick is one of Neil Joiner's favourite cars - not just because of the way it looks, but because of the silky smooth Straight-8 engine under the hood. The in-line 8 replaced the six-cylinder in 1931 and remained in production right up until 1953. Neil and I speculate that, so good was the engine, that makers were only forced to stop production in an effort to reduce the bonnet length. The 1937 Buick Special rode on a 122 in (3.10 m) wheelbase, and the engine was increased from 233 cu in 3.8 Litre to 248 cu in 4.1 Litre.
