BioMedical Science

The Biomedical Science program at Phillip O. Berry Academy of Technology is part of its larger STEM magnet offerings and prepares students for a range of health-related careers. Students in the program explore topics such as human medicine, physiology, genetics, microbiology, and public health, using equipment and tools found in professional labs.
The program follows a specific sequence of courses:
Principles of Biomedical Science: The introductory course where students investigate a fictional person's death to explore biology and medicine concepts, including autopsy reports and medical history.
Human Body Systems: Students examine the interactions of various human body systems as they learn about identity, movement, protection, and homeostasis.
Medical Interventions: This course involves activities like designing a prosthetic arm and investigating methods to prevent, diagnose, and treat diseases.
Biomedical Innovations (optional final course): Students build on their knowledge to design their own innovative solutions for current health challenges, potentially working on an independent design project with a professional mentor.
Certifications
Students in the pathway have the opportunity to earn industry certifications, which can include:
CPR/AED certification
Stop the Bleed training
American Heart Association Basic Life Support and Heartsaver First Aid
OSHA 10-Hour General Industry certification
