Initially written as an instrumental theme for the original 1983 film version, this nostalgic theme was composed by Keith Hopwood and Malcolm Rowe, and arranged by Brian Ibbetson. It was then adapted by the same composers and arranger into a song version for the television series and sung by British singer-songwriter Ralph McTell over the opening credits. It remains one of most instantly recognisable and beloved of television theme songs from the 80s.
The television series, produced by Cosgrove Hall Productions and Thames Television, was originally broadcast between 1984 and 1988. It used stop-motion animation to bring to life characters from Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel "The Wind in the Willows". The voice cast featured prominent actors including David Jason, Richard Pearson, Peter Sallis, Michael Hordern, among others.
