The Meghalaya Food Safety Department, acting on directives from the FSSAI following an eight-year-old complaint, has begun a temporary market recall of certain ORS-labelled beverages due to concerns over misbranding and misuse. Assistant Commissioner DBS Mukhim clarified that the recall is not due to a safety issue with ORS itself, but because these FSSAI-licensed products were being marketed and consumed as regular beverages instead of for their therapeutic purpose. The department has outlined a clear process: retailers must return the stock to distributors, who must then recall it and send it back to the manufacturer for necessary label corrections, while the essential, WHO-formula ORS used for medical purposes remains unaffected and outside the scope of the FSSAI action.
