I wrote this song about the huge sycamore tree in my garden which is about 200 years old . Due to it being pruned incorrectly it has become diseased, the tree specialist cannot save it so it will have to be cut down.
I live in Normandy France near the landing beaches and I often imagined a soldier possibly lying underneath it whilst fighting a fierce battle . Of course if it could talk it must have seen so many things. It is with a heavy heart that the tree must go as it's now in danger of falling.
Thanks to Spike for adding the mandolin.
Lyrics :
Ode to the tree
I used to sing to the mighty tree
Wake from your winter slumber
In spring bring forth new leaves
And in the shade I’ll sit there under
Let summer sun caress your boughs
And soft rain bathe your roots
Hot cracked earth the farmer ploughs
Then he gathers your fallen fruit
The autumn wind a tune it whistles
Then strips you of your coat
While a melancholy whistle
Hangs on to every note
Oh mighty tree remember me
Soon I’ll have to leave
My soul will ride upon the wind
And you will surely grieve
I used to sing to the mighty tree
Wake from your winter slumber
In spring bring forth new leaves
Now in the dust I lie there under
