How to Clean Prawns – Step by Step
Take the prawns
Gather the fresh prawns you want to clean. Rinse them under cold water to remove surface dirt.
Remove the outer shell and tail
Hold the prawn firmly.
Start peeling from the legs and work your way around to remove the shell.
Leave the tail on if desired for presentation, or remove it completely.
Remove the head and discard waste
Gently twist or pull off the head.
Discard the head and any internal waste or liquid that may come out.
Wash the prawns
Rinse the cleaned prawns under running water to remove any remaining debris or residue.
Remove the black vein (digestive tract)
Use a small knife or toothpick to make a shallow slit along the back of the prawn.
Locate the black vein and gently pull it out.
Rinse again if needed.
Now your prawns are clean and ready to cook!
How to Remove the Black Vein Without Removing the Shell
If you want to cook prawns with the shell on, but still remove the black vein:
Take a toothpick, small knife, or scissors
Use a pointed tool like a toothpick, the tip of a knife, or sharp scissors.
Make a small slit
At about 1/4th length from the head on the back of the prawn, make a tiny slit or hole through the shell.
Remove the black vein
Use the tool to gently pull out the thin black vein (digestive tract) through the hole.
Keep the shell on
The rest of the shell remains intact, so you still get the flavor and protection it adds while cooking.
