Keshet’s Movement for Mercy Project centers around the themes of community, relationships, shared history, and intersections of experiences. Co-created and performed by a team of collaborating artists from Keshet Dance Company, students from Keshet's M3 Program, Youth Leaders from Keshet’s Arts and Justice Network, and additional members of the Keshet community, this project is developed inside and outside of prison walls via the intentional and transformative intersections of arts and juvenile justice. Keshet’s NM Arts & Justice Network and the Movement for Mercy Project supports the unfiltered voices of system-impacted and justice-oriented youth advocates through a judgement-free process within which these voices can be included, explored, and honored. We believe it is important to hear these voices, and we amplify the voices of these youth and young adults through the vehicle of the arts.
Founded in 1996, Keshet has been providing daily dance programming for New Mexico's incarcerated and paroling youth since 1997 via its M3 Program (Movement + Mentorship = Metamorphosis). In 2020, Keshet expanded its efforts and launched the New Mexico Arts and Justice Network (AJN), a statewide network providing structure and coordination for the collaborative work of community-based arts organizations in partnership with public and private entities working with system-impacted youth and young adults. Connecting direct service, policy/advocacy, and research/evaluation, the Arts and Justice Network envisions a future in which youth are empowered and the systems that serve them are transformed by centering arts as a way to build the wellbeing of young people and their communities.
