Bees Rescued From a Compost Bin in Las Vegas
When most people think of where bees might settle, they picture tree branches, attics, or walls. But this time? They chose a compost bin.
We got the call from a homeowner who ended up face-to-face with a full-blown colony of bees.
As soon as the lid came off, it was clear that this was an established hive.
Compost bins are warm, humid, and full of organic material, which makes them surprisingly attractive to scout bees looking for a protected place to call home. Once a swarm decides it’s a good fit, they waste no time building comb and setting up shop.
They had already filled the bottom of the cover of the bin with several layers of honeycomb, brood, and we had an active queen.
We carefully removed each section of the bin, transferring comb and bees into a proper hive box. Every part of the hive, from nectar stores to developing brood, was relocated with precision and care.
Now, this rescued colony will be safely relocated to one of our apiaries, where they'll live in a much more bee-friendly environment.
No matter how odd the location, we’re always ready to respond with care, skill, and a deep respect for our Las Vegas Bees.
