This is a quick introduction to my new ice boat design that features foot steering and new ice blade skates fashion from cold-rolled steel angle iron.
Initial trials have shown it works very well. I am now easily able to steer and jybe at the end of reaches. Very simple construction and can be build cheaply by almost anyone who has rudimentary ability with hand tools. The wood, fasteners and angle iron were all less than $100. I cut the angle iron with a hack saw and rounded the runners with a hand file. I did use a belt sander to sharpen the long edge. You could do it with a hand file, it would just take a lot longer. I used a half inch bolt at the pivot -- probably an overkill, but it is working well.
