La neve cadeva lenta, come se ogni fiocco scegliessе con cura il proprio posto nel mondo. I riflessi dei grattacieli rimbalzavano sulle decorazioni dell’albero, mescolandosi al bagliore caldo del caminetto acceso.
Marta si fermò davanti alla finestra, avvolta in una coperta di lana che sapeva di casa. Osservò le luci lontane muoversi minuscole tra la neve, e per un attimo vennero a galla ricordi che non sapeva di conservare così nitidi. Le cambiava la vita attorno, ma certi battiti del cuore restavano identici.
Alle sue spalle, Mauri stava lottando con un groviglio di luci natalizie, borbottando come sempre. «Giuro che queste si annodano da sole» disse, sollevando un filo che sembrava un puzzle insolubile. Ma il sorriso che gli scappò subito dopo rendeva la scena incredibilmente tenera. Marta lo guardò e sentì un calore particolare, come se tutto l’appartamento si fosse ristretto per avvicinare solo ciò che contava davvero.
Sedettero sul tappeto, a pochi passi dal fuoco. Le luci dorate dell’albero tremolavano sulle loro guance, mentre le braci del caminetto crepitavano piano.
«Siamo cambiati, è vero» disse piano. «Ma ogni Natale, da quando ci sei tu, questa città sembra meno gigante.» Marta gli prese la mano. Fu un gesto lieve, quasi timido, ma il mondo sembrò fermarsi. Fuori, la città diventò più silenziosa; dentro, loro rimasero risoluti, avvolti dal calore, luce e memoria. Un bellissimo Natale in città.
E in quella quiete sospesa, tutto sembrava respirare insieme.

The snow was falling slowly, as if each flake carefully chose its place in the world. There, on the thirtieth floor of a skyscraper piercing the New York sky, a cozy apartment seemed to hold its breath. The large windows opened onto a sea of ​​illuminated towers: glass, steel, and lights stretching to the horizon, like an upside-down sky. The skyscrapers' reflections bounced off the tree decorations, mingling with the warm glow of the burning fireplace.
Marta stopped in front of the window, wrapped in a wool blanket that smelled of home. She watched the distant lights move tiny through the snow, and for a moment, memories she hadn't known were so clear surfaced. Life around her was changing, but certain heartbeats remained the same.
Behind her, Mauri was struggling with a tangle of Christmas lights, muttering as always. "I swear these knot themselves," he said, lifting a thread that looked like an insoluble puzzle. But the smile that escaped him immediately made the scene incredibly tender. Marta looked at him and felt a special warmth, as if the entire apartment had shrunk to bring together only what truly mattered.
They sat on the rug, a few steps from the fire. The golden lights of the tree flickered on their cheeks, while the embers in the fireplace crackled softly.
"We've changed, it's true," he said softly. "But every Christmas, since you've been here, this city seems less gigantic." Marta took his hand. It was a light, almost timid gesture, but the world seemed to stop. Outside, the city grew quieter; inside, they remained resolute, enveloped in warmth, light, and memories. A beautiful Christmas in the city.
And in that suspended stillness, everything seemed to breathe together.
