A protest organised by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) asking for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation turned violent. At least one police officer was hacked to death. Opposition leader Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir and many members of his party have been arrested. Mirza is the secretary general of BNP. He has led the party since chairwoman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia was arrested and jailed. With elections expected in January, the BNP has been protesting against Ms Hasina, calling for her to stand down and for a vote to be held under a neutral government.
