Hunting Property Logging Project - What To Expect

Creating the ideal food plot or enhancing bedding opportunities through hinge cutting is something every land manager enjoys. However, before diving into these types of habitat improvements, it’s often necessary to address a critical first step—removing large, mature trees. In many cases, especially when dealing with significant timber volume, the most effective approach is to have your property professionally logged.

Throughout the offseason, I visit numerous properties across Michigan, and a common theme I encounter is that many could greatly benefit from some level of timber harvest. Despite this, landowners are often hesitant to move forward, largely due to uncertainties surrounding the logging process. Concerns about potential negative outcomes or misconceptions about what a post-harvest landscape should look like can create understandable hesitation.

In this video, I’ll take you through part of the logging process as we have a section of our own property selectively cut. My goal is to demystify the process, highlight its benefits, and hopefully give you the confidence to consider logging as a tool for improving your land. While we all admire the perfectly manicured food plot, it’s easy to overlook where it started—often as an overcrowded woodlot in need of proper management.
