The Pennsylvania Railroad's (PRR) Ellsworth Branch, along with the branches that stem off it, were once important routes of transportation for people and goods to come in and out of eastern Washington County, Pennsylvania. Over the decades, traffic slowly dwindled on the branch lines and the rails serve very little purpose anymore. Norfolk Southern currently owns the line, dubbed the Ellsworth Secondary, but doesn't actively use the majority of it. I find this line interesting for how gradually it goes from being an active rail line to a practically abandoned relic of the past. Between ripped-out bridge girders, severed switches, and tracks buried under weeds and dirt, the Ellsworth Secondary is slowly disappearing.
More abandoned/inactive rails: • Abandoned Rails
Note: These tracks are not technically abandoned and still connect to an active rail line. Always be cautious and respect private property when exploring inactive rail lines.
