Marthandam, the largest town in Southern Kanayakumari district
derived its name from the king Anizham Thirunal Marthandan Varma
Maharaja, who is the founder & ruler of the erstwhile Travancore
kingdom. A major trade center bordering the state of Kerala situated
across National highway 47, nestled between the Arabian sea and the
southern tip of the Western Ghats. Surrounded by a picturesque
landscape of beautiful beaches, hills and valleys within 25km
circumference. A place of historical importance dating back to 9th
century CE as a Jain trading center. Marthandam is famous for honey,
cashew nut processing, rubber & hand - embroidered goods. The place is
grouped among the most fertile lands in Tamil Nadu with substantial
vegetation, along the banks of the river Then (south) Thamiraparani.
The people are pre-dominantly Tamil speaking. The place is home to a
variety of renowned educational institutions resulting in 100%
