“It’s really important that the people of Hawai'i preserve Hawaiian culture so we can embrace the world of who we are, what we are, what we have done, and where we’re going with Hawaiian culture.” -Kimokeo Kapahulehua
For hundreds of years, Native Hawaiians have coevolved with the natural environment of these islands and have accumulated deep knowledge and understanding of their ancestral lands and seas. Today, Native Hawaiians continue to rely on the environment as a primary source and foundation for Hawaiian culture and worldview.
This week, we are celebrating Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary and those who cherish the sanctuary and the resources found within it. Stay tuned tomorrow for the unveiling of the Hawaiian Islands Humpback Whale National Marine Sanctuary commemorative poster!
