About:
The Mourne Seven Sevens challenge is an annual endurance event in the Mourne Mountains of County Down, Northern Ireland. The objective is to climb the seven peaks over 700 meters above sea level. Despite the name, modern surveys have shown that only six of the peaks are actually over 700 meters, but the seventh, Slieve Meelmore, is included for traditional reasons.
Key aspects of the challenge include:
The Route: The course is approximately 18-19 miles (30-31 km) long with a significant ascent of around 2,500 meters (8,100 feet). The exact route between checkpoints is up to the individual, requiring participants to have strong navigation skills using a map and compass.
The Peaks: The seven peaks are: Slieve Donard, Slieve Commedagh, Slieve Lamagan, Slieve Binnian, Slieve Meelbeg, Slieve Meelmore, and Slieve Bearnagh.
Event vs. Race: The Mourne Seven Sevens is often presented as a challenge walk, not a race, with no prizes. However, there is a separate, more competitive mountain race held on the same day.
Difficulty: The challenge is considered a tough test of endurance and mountain skills. Participants must be experienced hillwalkers with a high level of fitness. The weather in the Mournes can be unpredictable, making navigation a crucial skill.
Required Kit: Participants are typically required to carry a minimum safety kit, which includes waterproof clothing, a hat, gloves, a whistle, a compass, a map, a first-aid kit, and a survival bag. Smartphones are not considered a substitute for a map and compass.
