The outro from "Madison Ave" leading into "Stardust" and "Walk Away" from 9/13/25 at Single Cut North in Clifton Park, NY. This "Stardust" moves through a few different Type 2 scenes before settling into a tension-filled modulation that lands in A major for a seamless segue into the James Gang's "Walk Away" as performed by Phish.
Type 2 jamming is when the band leaves the confines of the song - no longer following a set chord progression or any other framework other than a harmonic starting point. In this case, Stardust begins it's jam in D minor (the saddest of all keys). We move to D major (Ionian) via a parallel modulation, by raising the 3rd scale degree, and then shift into D Lydian by now raising the 4th scale degree. This is where you feel the tension, the instability, and what we like to call the "bug-eyed" feeling, like the trip is coming on faster than you anticipated. That allows us to make a hard, powerful shift to A major.
