Paul J. Smith was an American animator at Walt Disney, Harmon-Ising, UPA, Warner Bros. and Walter Lantz. He is mostly known for directing animated shorts at Lantz beginning around the 1950s to 1972 (and became the studio's sole director at 1967). He is remembered for animation notable firsts, such as animating the first shot of Tex Avery's redesigned Bugs Bunny in "A Wild Hare" (1940), becoming one of Walt Disney's first Hollywood employees and hypothetically inbetweening on the first Mickey Mouse.
Smith's animation might seem serviceable at first, but implements unique animation ideas, such as multiples, speed lines and abstraction. Around his arrival at Lantz, he starts to update his animation style; what was a carry-over from the Walt/Harmon-Ising period becomes a unique energetic way of updating to the timing and principles of fast energetic animation in the 1940s and onward.
Music used: "The Brittwood Stomp (I'm A Ding Dong Daddy)" & "Jam Fever" by Frank Newton, "Traffic Jam" by Artie Shaw and His Orchestra
