Manimahesh Kailash Yatra is a sacred pilgrimage to Manimahesh Lake and Manimahesh Kailash Mountain located in Chamba district of Himachal Pradesh, India. This Yatra is dedicated to Lord Shiva and is held every year in Sawan/Bhadrapada (August–September). Devotees believe that bathing in this lake and visiting Mount Kailash leads to salvation.

📍 Importance of Yatra

Religious belief: Manimahesh Kailash is considered to be the abode of Lord Shiva. According to local folklore, Lord Shiva performed penance here.

Manimahesh Lake: This lake is situated at an altitude of about 13,000 feet (3,950 m) above sea level.

Mount Kailash: In front of the lake lies the snow-covered “Manimahesh Kailash Peak”, which is considered to be a symbol of Lord Shiva himself.

🚩 Yatra route

The yatra usually starts from Bharmour (Chamba district, Himachal Pradesh).

Main routes:

1. Bharmour → Hadsar → Dunkarini → Gaurikund → Manimahesh lake

There is a trekking of about 13-14 km from Hadsar to the lake.

The journey can also be done on foot, horse or palanquin.

2. Bharmour → Helicopter service

Helicopter facility is available from Bharmour to Gaurikund.

From there, one has to climb on foot for 1-2 km.

🗓️ Yatra duration

The yatra runs from Rakshabandhan to Janmashtami (about 15 days).

During this time, thousands of devotees take a holy bath in Manimahesh lake.
