In the heart of the rugged wilderness of Prince William Sound, we embarked on a journey that would mark a milestone in Caleb’s life – his first big game hunt for a black bear.
Whittier, Alaska – a unique and fascinating town nestled in the breathtaking Prince William Sound. Whittier is renowned for its small population and its intriguing connection to the outside world through, The Anton Anderson Memorial Tunnel is the longest combined rail and highway tunnel in North America and stretches 2.6 miles long. The Anderson Tunnel serves as a lifeline, connecting Whittier to the rest of Alaska. This engineering marvel allows both vehicular and train traffic to pass through, creating a vital link for transportation.
Whittier itself is a charming coastal community with a distinctive history. Originally established as a military port during World War II, the town has evolved into a picturesque destination with stunning views of glaciers, mountains, and wildlife. Its remote location and captivating scenery make it a haven for nature enthusiasts and adventure seekers.
The Anderson Tunnel not only plays a crucial role in transportation but also adds an element of intrigue to Whittier's character. With its dual functionality for road and rail, the tunnel symbolizes the town's resilience and adaptability in the face of its challenging natural surroundings.

As the hunt approached, and having diligently studied hunters' education, Caleb, my young hunter, understood the importance of responsible and ethical hunting practices. He dedicated hours to perfecting his shooting skills. He knew that precision and accuracy were paramount when pursuing such majestic black bears in their natural habitat. The echo of gunshots reverberated through the valleys as he honed his marksmanship, fueled by the determination to make his first big game encounter a moment of success.
The air was crisp, carrying the scent of salty sea air and adventure, as he navigated the dense Alaskan terrain, well-prepared for the challenges that lay ahead.
