Emperor Norton: The Only Monarch of the United States | Tooky History

Joshua Norton, a citizen of 19th century San Francisco, was a rich businessman who mistakenly invested large sums of money into Peruvian rice and lost it all. He disappeared from the public until he returned one day and proclaimed himself Emperor Norton, the first and only emperor of The United States.

Between losing his money and returning as an emperor, Norton suffered from losing his mind. He came back and announced to the press that the people chose him to lead them. The press and fellow citizens of San Francisco found him amusing. Therefore, they accepted his claim.

During his "reign", Norton would patrol the city streets, make sure no sidewalk was obstructed and reviewed if the police was on duty. He would always greet people and was open for a chat with anyone.

Norton also made several imperial decrees, such as dissolving the Congress and the abolishment of both the Republican and Democratic parties. Additionally, calling San Francisco "Frisco", was an offence punishable by a 25$ fine, which amounts to 1000$ in today’s money.

Once, a police officer new in town, arrested Norton and wanted to send him to a mental institution. The public was outraged and Norton was released the same day. He was loved by everyone and always had a seat reserved for him in restaurants and theaters.

The police gave him new uniforms and the local press printed his own money.

Emperor Norton’s death was reported by all the newspapers, and more than 30 thousand people attended his funeral.
