Sitting on the shores of the Rhine River, the city of Strasbourg is a metropolis with an exceptional architectural heritage, as evidenced by its cathedral, which five generations of builders took turn to erect. The result is a masterpiece of Gothic art adorned with a unique, 142-meter spire that remained Christianity’s tallest for nearly four centuries. Having been coveted throughout its history, the city sealed itself off to protect from outside invaders. This process gave rise to the Vauban Dam, a lock and bridge capable of flooding all nearby upstream neighborhoods, thus shielding from the enemy. Strasbourg is also a gateway city and owes its Central Station to the Germans, who annexed the city in 1870. This monumental avant-garde building heralded what would be the great train stations of the 20th century.
