This is my 2nd attempt at remastering this wonderful concert at the Nissan Pavilion at Stone Ridge in Bristow just outside of Manassas, VA. This show features the original high energy version of Jack of Speed with Walter Becker on vocals, and the unrecorded Wet Side Story. I originally did this one as the first remastered concert I posted on my channel, and in the past nearly two years I've gotten better at this! I have developed my skills and learned new techniques, and the software I use has gotten updated and more powerful, so I decided this video needed to be redone and given a chance to really shine.
Personnel:
Donald Fagen (Vocals, Fender Rhodes, Keytar)
Walter Becker (Vocals, guitar)
Wayne Krantz (Guitar)
Tom Barney (Bass)
Ricky Lawson (Drums)
John Beasley (Keyboards)
Cornelius Bumpus (Saxophone)
Ari Ambrose (Saxophone)
Michael Leonhart (Trumpet)
Carolyn Leonhart (Vocals)
Michelle Wiley (Vocals)
The video quality from the source was unfortunately very poor, it was extremely dark with odd colors and noise and a wobbly image, and the video was not properly deinterlaced so there were lines running through it. I have done my best to remove the interlacing artifacts, brighten the video to make it easier to see, and I tried to make the colors look less obnoxious (since it was impossible for me to truly salvage the colors to make them look realistic). It's (very) far from perfect, but a significant improvement over my first video.
The audio quality from the source was fairly good, but with some problems. The source audio had some pretty obvious digital noise reduction done to it, leaving artifacts and removing some of the natural decay of the instruments. I was unable to fix that fully, but I did manage to restore some of the decay of the drums where it was most noticeable. There was also a lot of problems with the low end of the mix, with the kick drum nearly disappearing at times, and Tom Barney's bass guitar being low in the mix and nearly inaudible in some sections. Again, not something I could truly fix, but I was able to make it sound much more full and clear, and much tighter and crisper than my original effort. There was also a lot of weird shaping of the mid to high end, with a huge spike at 11.7khz, very little sound above 16khz, and harsh, nasal sound overall. I feel much better about how I was able to clean that area up this time around!
