in this video we will explain all aspects of mastitis .
Mastitis is an inflammation of breast tissue that can result in breast pain, swelling, warmth, and redness. It is most commonly seen in breastfeeding women, though it can occur in non-breastfeeding women and men as well. Mastitis can sometimes lead to infection and may cause flu-like symptoms, such as fever and chills.
Causes of Mastitis:
*Blocked milk ducts:* When a milk duct becomes blocked, milk can become backed up, leading to infection.
*Bacteria entering the breast:* Bacteria from the skin's surface or a baby's mouth can enter the milk ducts through a crack in the skin of the nipple or through a milk duct opening.
Symptoms of Mastitis:
Breast tenderness or warmth to the touch
Swelling of the breast
Pain or a burning sensation continuously or while breastfeeding
Redness of the skin, often in a wedge-shaped pattern
Fever of 101°F (38.3°C) or greater
General malaise or feeling ill
Treatment of Mastitis:
1. *Antibiotics:* If the mastitis is caused by a bacterial infection, antibiotics may be prescribed. It's important to complete the full course of antibiotics even if symptoms improve.
2. *Pain Relief:* Over-the-counter pain relievers such as ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help reduce pain and inflammation.
3. *Frequent Breastfeeding or Pumping:* Continue breastfeeding or pumping to help clear the blocked duct and to keep milk flowing. Ensuring proper latch and positioning can also help.
4. *Rest and Fluids:* Rest and stay hydrated to help your body fight the infection.
5. *Warm Compresses:* Applying warm compresses to the affected breast can help relieve discomfort and encourage milk flow.
6. *Massage:* Gently massaging the breast while feeding or pumping can help clear the blocked duct.
When to Seek Medical Help:
If symptoms persist after 24 hours of home treatment
If you develop a high fever or your symptoms worsen
If there is pus or blood in the milk
If you have recurrent episodes of mastitis
Consulting a healthcare provider is important for proper diagnosis and treatment to avoid complications such as abscess formation.
