(12 Jan 2017) Retired Marine Gen. James Mattis says he has no intention of rolling back changes in defense policy that allow LGBT personnel to openly serve in the military.
President-elect Donald Trump's pick to be defense secretary is telling the Senate Armed Services Committee that's he's only concerned about making the U.S. armed forces as lethal as they can possibly be.
"I'm not concerned about two consenting adults and who they go to bed with," Mattis says.
He's also telling Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, a New York Democrat, that he doesn't expect to reverse a 2015 decision by the Obama administration to open all front-line combat jobs to women.
"I have no plan to oppose women in any aspect of our military," Mattis says.
He says he'll be focused on getting the U.S. military into "it's most lethal stance."
