The Apostle James was known to the Spanish as Santiago. He was one of Christ’s disciples to be martyred. Spanish legend holds that the Saint appeared at the Battle of Clavijo and ensured the victory of Christian forces. James became the patron saint for the knightly Order of Santiago. An Order that the conquistador Francisco Pizarro was a member of.
