In the 18th century Britain and France fought for control of Caribbean islands -- including St Lucia. At the time of the American War of independence, France was allied to the Americans. This battle for the island in 1778 is therefore regarded as a part of the Independence War -- even though no Americans were involved. The site of the battle, alongside a modern tourist beach, seems largely forgotten. Today you can take a peaceful walk where it all happened.
