James' East of Eden costar Julie Harris commented: "One day he showed me some kind of Egyptian pendant, he opened it up and there was a hair of hers inside, from the day they met. He told me he had never felt anything like it.
"The happy couple ran into the opposition of Angeli's controlling mother, who did not accept Dean as a suitor for her daughter, pressured her daughter to leave the relationship and even tried to get Warner Bros. to separate them.
His daughter, the star, couldn't be with someone who didn't worry about his clothes, who had days when he didn't shave, who drove around in cars with the accelerator pressed hard, and who wasn't Catholic.
James had many arguments with Pier's mother and she was torn between her devotion and loyalty to her mother and her love for Dean. Despite everything, they continued to see each other.
James commented "We belong to totally different worlds, his mother didn't like me, I can't blame her for that, For better or worse I will spend the rest of my days with "Miss Pizza" as I called her because of her Italian ancestry."
Angeli once commented "He wanted to be loved, he had a problem with wanting to be loved, I loved him like I never loved another in my life, I couldn't give him the huge amount that he needed, there was no other way to be with Jimmy, except to love him and empty myself".
The end of the romance was abrupt, he had to leave for New York for work, and he found out from the press, when she decided to marry the singer Vic Damone, Angeli gave in to her mother's wishes by committing herself to a serious and Catholic man.
James was devastated, they say that on the day of the wedding, Dean waited outside the Church on his motorcycle, because he wanted to see them with his own eyes, when the newlyweds left the church, he roared his motorcycle and left the place.
James, harassed by the press, extracted a bitter statement from him: "I can't say I'm exactly happy about his wedding to Vic, something happened I think when I returned to New York, his family and friends made him change his opinion of me.
Angeli in a final note expresses: "I have a horrible fear of getting old, for me the 40s are the beginning of old age...Love is left behind, it died in a Porsche"

La coestrella de James en "Al este del Eden" Julie Harris comentó : "Un dia me mostró una especia de colgante egipcio, lo abrió y dentro llevaba un cabello de ella, del dia que se conocieron.Me dijo que nunca habia sentido nada parecido"
La feliz pareja se topó con la oposición de la controladora madre de Angeli, la cual no aceptaba como pretendiente de su hija a Dean ,presionó a su hija para dejar la relacion he incluso intentó que la Warner Bros los separara. Su hija la estrella no podia estar con alguien que no se preocupara por su ropa, que habia dias en que no se afeitaba, que andaba en autos apretando a fondo el acelerador y que no era catolico.
James tuvo muchas discusiones con la madre de Pier y ella quedó dividida entre su devoción y lealtad hacia su madre y el amor por Dean.A pesar de todo continuaron viendose.
James comentó " Pertenecemos a mundos totalmente distintos, a su madre no le gusto, no puedo culparla por ello,
para bien o para mal voy a pasar el resto de mis dias con "Miss Pizza" como la llamaba por su ascendencia Italiana"
Angeli comentó una vez "El queria ser amado, el tenia un problema con querer ser amado, yo lo amé como nunca ame a otro en mi vida,
no podia darle la enorme cantidad que el necesitaba, no habia otra forma de estar con Jimmy, excepto amarlo y vaciarme de mi misma"
El final del romance fué abrupto, el debió partir a Nueva York por trabajo, y se enteró por la prensa,cuando ella decidió casarse con el cantante Vic Damone, Angeli cedió a los anhelos de su madre comprometiendose con un hombre serio y catolico.
James estaba devastado aseguran que el dia de la boda , Dean esperaba afuera de la Iglesia en su motocicleta ,porque queria verlos con sus propios ojos , cuando los recien casados salieron de la iglesia, el hizo rugir su motocicleta y abandonó el lugar.
James acosado por la prensa le arrancaron una declaracion amarga :
" No puedo decir que este exactamente feliz por su boda con Vic, algo pasó pienso que cuando yo regresé a Nueva York, su familia y amigos le hicieron cambiar su opinion sobre mi.
Angeli en una nota final expreso:
"Tengo un miedo horrible a envejecer, para mi los 40 son el comienzo de la vejez...El amor a quedado atras, murió en un Porsche"
