Federal investigators with the National Transportation Safety Board are giving an update on the Statesville, North Carolina plane crash that killed seven people, including NASCAR legend Greg Biffle, his wife Cristina, two of their children and three others.
What we know so far
A Cessna C550 carrying Biffle’s family crashed just after 10 a.m. Thursday at Statesville Regional Airport. Records show the jet was headed to Florida when it took off, turned back toward the airport and went down near the runway, bursting into flames.
Federal records show at least two certified pilots were on board: Greg Biffle himself and airline transport pilot Dennis Dutton, who was rated to fly this specific aircraft and required to have a second in command. Dutton’s son, Jack Dutton, a recently certified single-engine pilot, and longtime NASCAR hauler Craig Wadsworth were also on the plane. There were no survivors.
Experts say the 1981 Cessna 550’s age alone isn’t the main concern — what matters is how it was maintained, and whether there were any recent mechanical problems.
