KTM SMC R 690 vs Husqvarna 701 Pure Sound POV

I had the chance to ride both the KTM 690 SMC R and the Husqvarna 701, and honestly, I really like both bikes. But I have to say, the SMCR won me over a little more. The gearing was shorter on that bike, and with the modified dB-killer in the exhaust, it sounded louder and more aggressive.

One thing that didn’t work too well on both bikes was the quickshifter. On the SMCR, it was actually fine most of the time, but I felt the shift lever was a bit too far forward. Especially when downshifting, as you’ll see in the video, I often had ignition cuts. I’d try to blip the throttle on downshifts, but no power came through — probably because the quickshifter didn’t detect the clutch, cut the ignition, and blocked the throttle response. Aside from that, the SMCR was an amazing ride. For wheelies, I even found it way more fun than the 701, although both bikes are a bit harder to lift compared to an MT-07. Despite having similar power (and the MT-07 being heavier), I struggled to get the SMCR — and even more so the 701 with its longer gearing — up in third gear.

The 701 also had quickshifter issues. Most of the time, it simply didn’t work. When I tried to upshift, it felt like the lever was blocked, and I had to apply a lot of force to shift. In the end, I just gave up on using the quickshifter and went back to clutch shifting.

In terms of looks, I’d say the 701 has a bit more potential for me — if it’s modified. The one I rode was mostly stock, while the SMCR had a nice decal kit, bicolor rims, and some upgrades that made it stand out. A customized 701 might look even better to me, but from the two bikes I tested, the SMCR definitely felt like the more exciting ride thanks to its upgrades and overall setup.
