Video of Sunburst Youth Academy Class 33 graduation ceremony, June 13, 2024, in Los Alamitos, California. 170 Southern California teenagers, ages 15.5-18, completed Sunburst's five month residential program – living and going to school on Joint Forces Training Base, Los Alamitos – and earned a year's worth of high school credits in half the time.
Among the 170 program graduates are 25 high school seniors who received their diplomas during the ceremony and one cadet who became the academy's 5,000th program graduate.
Sunburst is an alternative high school focused on credit recovery, resiliency and leadership. The tuition-free academy is a National Guard Youth Challenge Program run in partnership between the Orange County Department of Education and the California National Guard's Task Force Torch youth and community programs directorate.
