Adventure in Valhalla: Oregon's Hidden Gorge | Oregon Field Guide from the OPB Archives

“Oregon Field Guide” takes you on an unparalleled adventure of discovery.

In 2010, fire manager Mike Malone was in a helicopter and spotted a hidden gorge topped with a giant waterfall. He could find no record of the feature in books, guides or online resources. He decided to hike in, and after a couple of attempts, he found a vast slot canyon and what he suspected would be a series of big waterfalls. He nicknamed the gorge "Valhalla" and contacted “Oregon Field Guide”. In the summer of 2014, our crews traveled deep into the wilderness to explore and bring back what are believed to be the first images of this hidden geologic wonder in the Oregon Cascades.
